Technology, built in-house.

MigrationLabs develops its own software. Not as a product line, and not because building is more interesting than buying — because the tooling that would let us work to the standard we hold ourselves to did not exist in the form we needed it. What we build is developed against real engagements and shaped by them.

What we hold it to.

Reliability is designed in, not asserted.

The reason to build rather than buy is that the behaviour you need can live inside the thing itself instead of being promised around it. What we build is meant to behave the same way on a bad day as on a good one.

Work stays reviewable after the fact.

Someone who was not there should be able to examine what was done and reach their own conclusion about it, long after the work finished. That is a property software either has or does not, and it has to be designed in from the beginning.

Problems surface rather than settle.

Software that quietly absorbs a problem is making a decision on your behalf — usually the wrong one, and always later than you would have wanted to hear about it. We build so that the unexpected becomes visible and deliberate instead of invisible and assumed.

It is built against real work.

Every part of it exists because an engagement needed it. Nothing was built speculatively, which is a slower way to develop software and a considerably better way to end up with software that is actually used.

Where this stands

This is working software under active development, built and extended alongside the engagements that need it. It is not a product you can license today, and we are not going to describe it as one. What it changes for a client is what we are able to take on, and how confidently we can stand behind the result.

How we think about the problems underneath it is set out in our writing.

Bring us a difficult one.

The engagements worth talking to us about are the ones where the difficulty is real — where the constraints are awkward, the requirements are unusual, or the work has stalled because nothing available quite fits it.
