A company built around one hard problem.
Technical work that sits between systems, between teams, and between the tools that were meant to cover it. Everything MigrationLabs does is some version of that, and the company is organised around doing it properly rather than around doing many things adequately.
What we do
We work with organizations on complex technical and operational change: establishing what a piece of work actually involves, building what it needs, implementing it inside the environment it has to live in, and staying accountable for how it runs afterwards.
We work as the team that owns a piece of work, or as the part of it a client does not have the capacity to carry. Both are normal.
How we are set up
We are small and deliberately specialised. Rather than covering many kinds of technical work shallowly, we take on one class of problem and build real depth in it, including the software that work needs and that did not already exist.
That shapes what we say yes to. We would rather turn down an engagement than take one we would be learning on at a client's expense.
The team
We are small, so the team is organised around functions rather than titles. Every engagement draws on more than one of them, and the people doing the work are the people you talk to.
Software engineering
Designing and building what an engagement needs, from the systems underneath it to the interfaces people work in.
Data systems
The data infrastructure and internal tooling an engagement runs on, and the work of keeping it dependable.
Research and analysis
Working out what a problem actually is before anyone builds for it, and defining what a correct result has to satisfy.
Operations and delivery
Scope, sequence, and the commercial side of an engagement, so the technical work is not also carrying them.
Experience
The experience behind those functions is engineering, research, and operational rather than any one of them. That is deliberate. Work that sits between systems and between teams tends to fail at the seams — in the assumptions no discipline owns — and a team drawn from a single background is the least likely to notice them.
In practice it means an engagement can be specified, built, delivered, and operated by the same people, rather than handed between them.
Where we are
MigrationLabs is early. The approach is settled, the software behind it is in active development, and we are taking on engagements now. We would rather say that plainly than imply a longer history than we have.
The approach, settled
Every engagement runs through the same four stages, and each one closes on something a client can read and take issue with before the next begins.
Taking on engagements
We are early and we are open for work, and deliberate about which engagements we say yes to.
The software, in development
It is built alongside the engagements that need it rather than ahead of them, and it is not a product anyone can license today.
