Engineering for systems in motion.
MigrationLabs works with organizations on technical problems that sit between systems, operations, and established tooling. We design and implement the infrastructure that makes complex change reliable.
The work we take on
Some technical problems sit between teams, between systems, and between the tools that were supposed to cover them. They are rarely hard because the goal is unclear. They are hard because the environment was built for something else, the rules that govern it were never written down, and there is no obvious way to show the result is right.
- The work is important enough to get right and unusual enough that no team's remit quite covers it.
- A process that was meant to be temporary has become the thing everything else depends on.
- The constraint is scale rather than difficulty: the work is well understood, and there is a great deal of it.
- Existing tools handle most of the problem and fail on the part that actually matters.
Four categories of work.
Advisory
Establish what the work actually involves, and what a correct outcome looks like, before anyone commits to it.
Engineering
Build purpose-specific software where existing tools are not enough, and where the result has to be defensible.
Implementation
Deliver the work inside the environment the organization already runs, at the pace that environment allows.
Technical operations
Run and support what was built, and hand it over in a state the team can carry without us.
Who we work with
Technical teams
Carrying a problem adjacent to the work they were hired for, on top of the work they were hired for.
Operations teams
Holding a process together manually because the alternative was never built.
Organizations managing complex systems
Where the real difficulty is in how the parts meet, rather than inside any one of them.
Teams navigating high-stakes change
Where the schedule was set by someone else and the result has to be right the first time.
How we work.
Define correct before building.
We agree what a correct outcome looks like while it is still cheap to change, then build to that. A requirement nobody wrote down cannot be met deliberately — only met by luck, and only noticed when it is not.
Critical work should be reproducible.
Reproducible, measurable, and reviewable. Work that cannot be run again and checked is work somebody quietly does over again from scratch, so what we hand over is built to be examined rather than taken on trust.
Different environments fail differently.
We design around the system in front of us rather than forcing every problem through one abstraction. Assuming a single approach covers everything is how the hard parts get discovered last.
Results land where the work already happens.
What we build runs in an environment your team already operates and can keep running without us. We are not trying to become a dependency you have to keep paying for.
We build our own tools.
MigrationLabs develops proprietary software, built where the tools that would do the job properly did not already exist. It is developed alongside real engagements rather than ahead of them, which is why it answers problems that turn up in practice rather than ones that looked likely on paper.
